State Settings of American Vignettes for “Summer Garments” writing challenge

The second call for American Vignette submissions, prompted by the words “Summer Garments,” generated warm, sun-drenched responses. Thank you to those who submitted! Below is a selection of creative nonfiction entries that captivated me with their sense of place. I hope you enjoy them. If you are hankering to write about your home state, another prompt will go up tomorrow, Wednesday June 3, 2014, and the deadline will be one month instead of two weeks. I look forward to reading your work.

And now, Summer Garments.

Cutting Cloth by Andrea Badgley (that’s me!) (Maryland)

Summer Skin by Leslie Newlin (Nebraska)

Frankie and Alice (Brooklyn 2013) by

Sandy Bottoms by Kim Norris (Virginia)

Also, the poll results are in, and it looks like chaos rules: the American Vignette guest posts will continue to meander around the country without connection to the state I’m currently reading in fiction. In terms of a newsletter, the majority of you would prefer to follow the blog to find new prompts, so I will not create a newsletter at this time.

American Vignette Show Us Your State Writing Challenge badge on andreareadsamerica.comAmerican Vignette is a series of guest posts and creative nonfiction writing challenges inviting readers to share stories from home. Prompts will be posted on the first Wednesday of each month and will include challenge guidelines. If you would like to submit an unprompted piece, submission guidelines are here.
